D-Day. After last week’s game, the lads knew that they needed to win if they were to clinch the league title, and despite the opposition being the league’s bottom team, Lea Hall, they were not taking the game for granted. This was demonstrated when, within the first 15 seconds, JT had a shot saved by the Lea Hall ‘keeper.
The Dragons were kicking down hill in the first half and it was pretty much one way traffic. However, as nerves on the sidelines continued to build, it didn’t appear to be affecting the lads.
It took 10 minutes for the Dragons to take the lead. After a corner was cleared by Lea Hall, Will Benton beat his man to the ball and laid it on to Alfie, who turned his man and smashed it past ‘keeper, sparking delirium on the side lines.
But Alfie’s goal was the first in a 3 goal burst in 4 minutes which put the game out of Lea Hall’s reach. The second was a header, scored by JT, from an Alfie corner. It was the Dragons first and only headed goal of the season.
The third was a truly solo effort from Alex. Defending a Lea Hall free kick, Caddy and Alex formed a wall and when the ball struck Alex, he picked up the ball and broke from his own half. When his first shot was saved by the ‘keeper, he kept nerve and calmly slotted the rebound.
Lea Hall started the second half brightly and with the downhill advantage, were able to exert some pressure, but it didn’t last long and the game settled back into the same routine with the Lea Hall ‘keeper making a string of fine saves.
Matty was forced to make a good save with time running out, but the second half finished scoreless and the final result was 3-0 to the Dragons and the League title assured.
Congratulations to Marty and the boys on a fantastic first season of competitive football and they truly deserve their title.
